I love Wild Planet products because not only do they source their fish sustainably, but their products are also really high quality. All Wild Planet tuna is 100% sustainably pole & line caught, which is the most sustainable method for catching tuna. Feel free to read through the few points below to learn more about how Wild Planet does it.
• Pole & line fishing selectively catches each fish one at a time. This allows selective harvesting to target one species at a time and eliminate bycatch (species unintentionally caught in the process of fishing a targeted catch) & large volumes of wasted seafood caught in commercial fishing nets.
• With pole & line fishing, should an occasional unintended species or infant fish end up on the line, they are immediately tossed back into the water with a good chance of survival. Thus, the amount of bycatch is minimized.
• Pole & line fishing catches the younger, smaller migratory fish near the surface of the ocean, that are naturally lower in mercury.
• Pole & line fishing also avoids overfishing, as big fishing vessels are catching fish faster than nature can replenish them.
Ingredients for the Tuna Salad:
Wild Planet albacore tuna – a high quality, high protein fish that is perfect for this salad. I’ve also made this with the Wild Planet salmon and Trader Joe’s canned salmon (with bones and skin), and they’re both delicious!
Veggies – I’m using snap peas and Persian cucumbers for a crunch factor, AND it adds in extra veggies! I used snap peas as they were in season, but you can substitute fresh corn, celery, or carrots. The trick is to cut them into small pieces (~1/2″) so it blends well into the salad.
Scallion – flavor booster that brings another layer of depth to the salad.
Garlic aioli – what binds the salad together and gives it that traditional creamy, delicious texture. You can also substitute mayo or whole fat greek yogurt.
Seasonings – I’m using kosher salt, black pepper, extra virgin olive oil and everything but bagel seasoning (optional) to season the salad. Simple but flavor packed and yummy!
Lemon – lemon juice adds a zingy flare and brightens up everything.
